This Orange Chocolate Mug Cake is a delightful single serve cake made in a microwave in just 5 minutes. Made with healthy goodness of oats, this mug cake is gluten-free, vegan (egg and dairy free) and refined sugar free. It is a moist chocolate cake loaded with refreshing citrus flavors to satisfy your sweet cravings instantly.
What is a Mug Cake?
Mug Cake is a single serving cake that is literally made in a mug in a Microwave and is ready within 5 minutes from start to finish. Mug cakes are typically made in a microwave as most of the mugs are not oven safe. Best part that i like about a mug cake is that it is fuss free. As you do all the mixing, whisking and baking in a single mug and serve the cake also in the same mug, you have lots of time for your loved ones !( dish-washing time saved) . So quick and easy that even kids can make their own with little supervision. Choosing your own toppings and flavors is super fun.
What goes into this Orange Chocolate Mug Cake ? The Ingredients:
- Oats: This is a gluten-free cake, so wheat flour is replaced with oat flour. To make oat flour at home, simply powder the oats in a blender. If not having any dietary restrictions, you may use wheat flour instead of oat flour. I have tried this recipe using whole wheat flour also and it worked just perfect for us.
- Cocoa Powder: The chocolate flavor comes from cocoa powder. Use good quality unsweetened cocoa powder for best results.
- Jaggery powder: To make this mug cake a guilt-free affair, i have replaced refined sugar with jaggery powder. You may use any other healthy sweetener like coconut sugar instead.
- Orange Pulp and Orange Zest: This mug cake is loaded with refreshing citrus flavors coming from fresh orange pulp and orange zest. I have simply pulsed the peeled and deseeded orange segments in a blender jar to obtain the pulp and used it without straining it. You may use homemade or store bought orange juice instead .
- Oil: Any neutral cooking oil can be used here. If not on a vegan diet, you may use melted butter as well.
- Nuts: If you like a bite in your cake, add any chopped nut of your choice. I have used walnuts.
- Vanilla Extract: Add a lovely flavor to chocolate cakes.
- Baking Powder: helps your cake to rise.

Chocolate Delights was the theme for #288th week on Foodie Monday Blog-Hop, a Facebook gourmet group, where a bunch of passionate food bloggers share their culinary creations every Monday depending upon a pre-decided theme. Swaty was our hostess for this week and she had proposed dishes with chocolate and orange as the 2 themes. Though Chocolate theme won with maximum votes, i wanted to cook something using my favorite citrus fruit Orange, so combined both the themes and the outcome was this utterly delicious Orange Chocolate mug cake. Meanwhile, do check out Swaty's space for some wonderful recipes both from Indian and International Cuisine. Her Maamoul Cookies (Date filled cookies) recipe is next on my to-do list.
