Potato Cheese Sandwich is a delectable snack that is liked by one and all. A simple vegetarian stuffed sandwich in which a spicy potato stir-fry is used as a filling along with grated cheese in between the buttered bread slices. The sandwich is then grilled in a sandwich maker or on a pan on stove top until it is golden brown and crisp. Potato cheese sandwich is soft from within and crunchy from outside. It can be packed in your kid's lunch box or served as breakfast or an after-school snack. These sandwiches make a great picnic or party food and tastes good on its own but you can pair it with some ketchup, dip, sauce or chutney of your choice.
What is a Sandwich?
A sandwich is a food typically consisting of vegetables, slices cheese or meat, placed on or between slices of bread. Sandwiches come in many different varieties like open-faces sandwich where any kind of bread serves as the base to which filling is added at the top and does not have any covering over the filling. Plain Sandwich with filling placed between two slices of bread, grilled sandwich where the prepared bread slices with stuffing is grilled, pinwheel sandwich wherein the fresh bread slices are flattened with a rolling pin, stuffed with filling that is spreadable and rolled up like a jelly roll, ribbon sandwich- a multi-tiered sandwich, etc.
Ingredients of Potato Cheese Sandwich
Potato and cheese is a classic combination. One can never get wrong with this combo. Here, in this stuffed sandwich recipe, a spicy potato stir-fry is used as a stuffing along with grated cheese. One can simply mash the boiled potato, season it with spice powders and stuff in between 2 bread slices. But i prefer to stir fry the grated boiled potato with caramelized onions and ginger-garlic-green chili paste. It makes the sandwich all the more delicious and lip smacking. The prepared sandwich is then grilled using a sandwich maker. Let's have a look at the ingredients one by one.
- Bread slices: Any variety of bread can be used to make this sandwich. You may use brown bread, white bread, whole wheat (ata) bread or home baked bread loaf.
- Potatoes: Potatoes are boiled, peeled and grated before stir frying them.
- Onions: Onions lend a lovely mild sweet taste to the potato stir-fry which balances the spices from green chilies.
- Green chilies: I personally like to keep this sandwich a bit on the spicier side. You may adjust the number of green chilies used as per your spice tolerance.
- Ginger-Garlic : Minced ginger and garlic add lovely flavor to the potato stir-fry.
- Cheese: I have added grated processed cheese in the stuffing. You may skip it if you wish. You may also choose to use cheese slices instead.
- Oil : Little oil is used for making the potato stir-fry.
- Butter: I have smeared the butter slices with butter.
Can I make this potato cheese sandwich without a sandwich maker?
Absolutely yes. You can toast the buttered bread slices first on a pan or skillet. Stuff it with potato stir-fry and grated cheese and then place the sandwich again on the heated skillet or pan and cover cook for few minutes on low flame until the cheese melts.
