Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe/How to make Pizza Sauce at home from scratch

Homemade Pizza Sauce made using fresh ripe tomatoes, herbs and spices is easy to make, is healthy and flavorful and far more better than then the preservative laden store bought ones, plus it is easy on your pocket too ! It takes just 15 minutes to make this vegan and gluten-free homemade pizza sauce from scratch and it stays good for 15 days on refrigeration and couple of months in the freezer.

What goes into my version of Pizza Sauce? The Ingredients:

This Homemade Pizza sauce uses simple and fresh ingredients that are easily available in our kitchen pantries.

  • Tomatoes: Use fresh red ripe tomatoes that are blemish free. Roma tomatoes work best for this recipe. I have used the hybrid long tomatoes that are easily available in Indian markets. The tomatoes should be ripe but firm in texture.
  • Garlic: Garlic adds a wonderful flavor to the pizza sauce. Use minced or finely chopped garlic. Do not use garlic paste for best results.
  • Onions: Addition of onions is optional. But i love the taste caramelized onions lend to this sauce.
  • Olive oil: Use olive oil for best results. However if you do not have it in your stock, you may use any neutral tasting cooking oil instead.
  • Herbs: I have used fresh basil and dried oregano in this recipe which makes the Pizza sauce all the more flavorful. You may use mixed dried Italian herbs also instead.
  • Seasoning: Freshly crushed black pepper, red chili flakes and salts are the seasoning used in this recipe. I add little sugar towards the end which does not make the sauce sweet but certainly makes the sauce more flavorful as it balances the tangy taste of the tomatoes.
  • Kashmiri red chili powder. This is optional, but lends a beautiful color to the sauce without making it very hot.
Why Homemade ? Because homemade is always best. It is cheaper, healthier and far more tastier than the store bought ones, plus it is preservative free and easy to make. You can also customize the flavors as per our taste and preference. Also the sense of satisfaction you get after making something healthy and delicious for your family is unmatched. •  The left over can be easily stored for 2 weeks on refrigeration in a clean dry, air-tight glass container or jar.
  •  If you want to increase the shelf life of the pizza sauce, add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to it, also do not cut down on the mentioned quantity of oil.
  • You can use this homemade pizza sauce as a sandwich spread, to make regular or bread pizzas, in your savory bakes and muffins, in your frankie rolls, parathas, tortilla and also in your pasta.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Cooking Time: 10-12 minutes

Serves: 300 ml Pizza Sauce which is sufficient to make 4 large (10 inch) Pizza

Ingredients:

  • 8 medium sized ripe tomatoes around 750 grams
  • 3 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8-10 small to medium sized garlic cloves / 2 teaspoon finely chopped
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Kashmiri red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon  red chili flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 4-5 fresh basil leaves, torn
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Pizza Sauce at home from scratch

  1. Select 8 medium sized red ripe tomatoes that are blemish free. Wash and pat dry.
  2. Chop each tomato roughly into 4-6 pieces.
  3. Add them to a mixer grinder jar and grind them to a fine puree without adding any water.
  4. Heat a sauce pan and add olive oil to it.
  5. Add minced or finely chopped garlic to it.
  6. Fry the garlic for around a minute on low to medium flame.
  7. Add finely chopped onion and saute until it turns translucent and there is no raw smell.
  8. Now pour the tomato puree and mix well.
  9. Cook the tomato puree for 5-7 minutes on low flame while stirring intermittently. I prefer to cook the sauce without covering it. Use an appropriate size sauce pan and make sure the flame is low to medium as the sauce will bubble and splutter.
  10. Once the sauce thickens, season it with oregano, roughly torn basil leaves, Kashmiri red chili powder, black pepper powder and salt.
  11. Give it a good stir and allow the sauce to cook further for another 2 minutes.
  12. Once you notice oil on the sides of the pan, add 1-2 teaspoon of sugar, give it a good stir and switch off the flame.
  13. Our healthy and flavorful Pizza Sauce is ready. Allow it to cool down completely before transferring it to a clean, air-tight glass jar.

Recipe Notes:

  • Select fresh ripe red tomatoes that are blemish free to make this Pizza sauce.
  • If you do not like garlic chunks you may grate or mince it but do not use garlic paste in this recipe. However, you may use garlic powder instead.
  • Use fresh basil for best results. If you do not have fresh basil, use 1 -2 tsp of dried basil.
  • Use good quality Olive oil for best results. If you do not have olive oil, use neutral cooking oil instead.
  • To increase the shelf life of this pizza sauce, you may add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to it.
  • Adding little sugar does not make the pizza sauce taste sweet, but makes it more flavorful as the sugar balances the tangy flavor of tomatoes.
  • This pizza sauce can be used for making bread pizza, in pasta or as a sandwich spread.
  • The above recipe yields around 300 grams of Pizza sauce, which is sufficient to make 4 large(10") pizzas. The recipe can be easily scaled up as per your need.
  • This homemade Pizza sauce has a good shelf life of 15 days in refrigerator in an airtight glass jar. You can store it for a longer time (couple of months) upon freezing in ice trays and then storing in zip lock bags.
