Spicy Crumbled Tofu / Tofu Bhurji / Vegan Recipe

Tofu also known as bean curd, is a food made from coagulating Soy milk and then pressing the resulting curds into soft white blocks. It not only has a low calorie count and relatively large amounts of protein but also is a vegan substitute for Paneer(Cottage Cheese) and is also easy on pocket. Tofu has a very little flavor or smell on its own and acts as a versatile bland ingredient that takes up the flavor of the other ingredients used in the dish.

Basically my family is not a great fan of Tofu but they love Paneer , and since Tofu has much resemblance to Paneer, I thought of this dish to disguise them and to my surprise they had it happily thinking it as Paneer Bhurji ! Bhurji means scrambled. This dish involves use of scrambled Tofu hence the name. The recipe is more or less similar to the Egg bhurji or Paneer bhurji , which are more famous in India.

Tofu bhurji is a spicy and tasty dish which can be served with Chapati , Paratha or Paav in lunch box or at home as side dish for lunch or brunch . Best part is,  the recipe is very easy and can be made within 10-15 minutes . I have used the smooth Tofu for this recipe.

Ingredients:
  • 300 grams smooth Tofu (drained and Crumbled)
  • 1 big Onion fined chopped
  • 1 big Tomato finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup green Peas
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp red Chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp black Pepper powder
  • Finely chopped fresh Coriander for garnishing
  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • Salt to taste
Method:
  1.  Heat oil in a wok on medium heat and add Cumin seeds. Once the seeds crackle add the finely chopped Onions and fry nicely for about a minute.

  2.   Add the chopped Tomatoes followed by green Peas and stir fry nicely.

  3. Now add the Turmeric powder, Red Chili powder and Black Pepper powder and salt and mix well.

   4. Once the spices blend nicely add the crumbled Tofu and stir fry the whole mixture for 1-2 minutes .

 5.  Put off the flame and garnish with finely chopped fresh Coriander. Serve hot with chapati or Paratha .
