Mushroom Masala / Button Mushroom Curry Recipe

Button Mushrooms are very versatile and can be used in Soups, curries , pizza , pastas and rice dishes. They have bland flavor and take up the taste of seasonings very well. Today i am sharing a very delectable Mushroom Masala recipe which goes well with chapati , naan or Jeera Rice.

Mushroom Masala  is a mildly spiced button mushroom curry which is an onion tomato based gravy with a very simple and easy to follow recipe . Have used Capsicum also which complements the button mushrooms very well. Adding some fresh cream makes the gravy creamy and rich. A dash of Kasuri methi  at the end makes the gravy more flavorful !

  • 200 - 250 grams Button Mushrooms
  • 1 large Green Bell Pepper
  • 1 large Onion
  • 1 large Tomato
  • 2-3 Garlic pods
  • 1/2 inch piece Ginger
  • 2 green Chilies
  • 2-3 tbsp fresh Cream
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric
  • 2 tsp Red Chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp crushed Kasuri Methi / dried Fenu greek leaves
  • Fresh Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Salt to taste
  1. Wash the white Button Mushrooms under running water and pat dry on a kitchen towel. Never soak the mushrooms in water.

  2.  Remove a bit of base stock with knife and then slice them and keep aside.

  3.  Take Ginger, Garlic and Green Chili in a grinder jar and make a coarse paste. Similarly roughly chop Tomato and Onion and grind to a fine paste .

  4.  In a pan heat up oil on a medium heat and add the cumin seeds. Once they splutter add the green chili, ginger and garlic paste. Saute for a while and add the Onion tomato paste .

  5. Saute this paste very well till there is no more raw smell. Now add the turmeric powder, red Chili powder and Garam masala .

   6. Mix well and saute until we can see oil releasing from the sides of the pan and then add in the sliced Mushrooms and Capsicum. Saute for 1 -2 minutes.

  7.  Add little water and salt and cover cook until the mushrooms are cooked.

  8.  Now stir in fresh cream and mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Now lastly add the crushed Kasuri methi, mix well and put off the flame.

   9.   Garnish with finely chopped Coriander leaves and serve hot with Chapati or Jeera Rice.
